We started with a basic generic wooden train set and have been adding accessories over time. This is one of the better ones we have bought. I was going to just get the stacking risers but this a a better value for your money. When building your layout though, I would start with this piece and build off from it to better incorporate it.

My kids (4 years and 2 years old) love playing this toy. We bought the Thomas traing engine with the basic wood railway and now we are lovers of this toy. Really easy to use, durable and funny to play. This expansion pack adds great high ways and tunnels to the railway.
