Open Question: What causes low IQ if it’s not genetic?
My oldest sybling is “underdeveloped” for his age (ie: as an adult he hasn’t achieved what his peers would have, financially, socially & in the world of work – in fact he almost seems like a teenager, but he’s 50). In my family we don’t discuss it but if we have to we would refer to him as “slow”. I am puzzled as to how he became as he is as we are all reasonably intelligent with normal or above normal IQ’s, but clearly he has something a bit wrong with him & must have a low IQ. No one can really recall this happening until maybe High School or after he left High School. Prior to that he appeared normal. He didn’t do drugs, have an accident or fall ill so we can’t figure out how he came out so different to the rest of us in terms of his mental development. It’s hard for me to discuss this as you kind of don’t want to admit that there’s a problem. It has effected him educationally & at work & he just works as a cleaner, whereas the rest of us have management jobs at large companies or are professionals. He lacks social skills, he talks ok but says inappropriate things sometimes but doesn’t see what he’s said wrong. He is not self aware. He knows about current events & politics, etc & seems to always have his facts right with those kinds of things but he evaluates people in his personal life completely inaccurately. He never had problems reading or writing but he acts like he has an OCD when doing things. Like if he wrote out a shopping list he would have to think too hard while doing it & would check it one too many times. He forgets things easily & loses his train of thought too easily, he seems to have to think too hard. If he was putting butter on toast it’s like he thinks it requires his total concentration & he’d take too long to do it compared to most people. He seems to have to concentrate on everything & can only do one thing at a time. He doesn’t learn new skills easily & is too much of a perfectionist in an OCD kind of way, but I don’t think he actually has one.
