Educational Infant Toys

Educational infant toys are sometimes a point of contention in families. Old fashioned thinkers believe that infants will learn what they need to learn, simply with the natural stimulus they are afforded in their everyday lives. After all, “Grandma grew up just fine, and she never played with infant educational toys.” And that’s certainly true. But could educational infant toys have enhanced Grandma’s start to life?

Probably. Educators and child psychologists believe such exposure to infant educational toys helps babies become alert and aware at even younger ages than they might if not exposed to such options. Initially, experts advise giving infants educational toys in basic black and white. Not only is that what they first see best-prior to developing their sight for colors-but black and white is less startling and less confusing to very small babies.

Once babies get a little older, introduce pastel and primary colors into their assortment of educational infant toys. Books are often the best way to start introducing any kind of toy to a baby, and should be in ample supply in any infant educational toy collection. In addition to books, there are a variety of play mats designed to enhance an infant’s visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation. These mats are soft and safe for babies to lie on while supervised. They often include built in features that make noise, play music, or elicit some form of response from the infant.

As the baby grows, so will the options for educational infant toys. Baby gyms-designed to hang from a crib or sit on a floor or mat with the baby underneath, are wonderful options for increasing stimuli. Infants learn to reach out and touch the objects hanging from these mobile-type gyms. Often they are rigged with bells and beads to create fun and exciting sounds for babies.

Always be sure that educational infant toys are made by reputable companies that follow national standards for child and infant safety. A quick online search can help parents ascertain that the educational infant toys they’re considering purchasing are in fact safe for the babies.
