Barbie History – A History of the 1950s Barbie Doll

Once you start getting into collecting Barbie dolls you usually find yourself wanting to know a little bit of the history of Barbie, especially if you are interested in the vintage Barbie dolls. What you may not realize is that Barbie is named after a real little girl, and for that matter, so is Ken.
Barbara Handler is the daughter of Barbie‘s inventor, Ruth Handler. Ruth Handler had noticed that when her daughter played with her paper dolls, she frequently pretended that the dolls were grown-ups. Most dolls available in the early 1950s were baby dolls so Ruth thought that might represent an opportunity for her husband Elliot’s toy company, Mattel.

Why is Mattel The Leading Toy Manufacture?

If you organize by revenue, Mattel Inc. is the largest toy company in the entire world. It was founded in 1945 by Matt Matson and Elliot Handler, who combined their two first names in order to create the name of the company. Mattel’s longest running and most iconic toy product is the Barbie doll. Barbie was created 1959 by Ruth Handler, the wife of founder Elliot Handler. At the time there wasn’t a precedent in America for dolls for young girls that actually looked like adult women. The idea was originally greeted with a good deal of scepticism, but Ruth recognized that this was a potential untapped market, and she eventually persevered. Due to her passion, Mattel became the first company to successfully capitalize on an adult figure doll marketed specifically towards an audience of young girls looking to play pretend as an adult role model.

Popular Barbie – Does She Represent Real Women?

Image : http://www.flickr.com
There is a certain irony that a doll fashioned after a German men’s joke, Bild Lilli, should have captured the desire of millions of young girls around the world. She was the inspiration of Ruth Handler who found her while visiting Switzerland in the mid 1950s. Apparently Ruth’s own daughter, Barbie, preferred to play with more adult like dolls than baby dolls. With the help of both technicians and engineers from Mattel (a company owned by the Handlers and their partner Harold Mattson) and Charlotte Johnson, a fashion designer, Ruth had her Barbie. In 1958 the patent for this long-limbed, small-waisted, shapely doll was granted. The first Barbie had either long blond or brunette hair in a pony tail and wardrobe to die for.

The Origin of the Barbie and Ken Dolls

Image : http://www.flickr.com
There are many children who have a favorite type of toy. This can be teddy bears, Cabbage Patch dolls, Care Bears, soft dogs and cats. They can even be the world famous Barbie and Ken dolls. These two dolls are well known by many people and not just children. While these two dolls are mainly used as toys by little girls, collectors will not hesitate to buy either of these should they come across one.
