Parrot Owners – Materials Commonly Used in Bird Toys
WOOD
Birds need to chew wood is an excellent material for meeting this need naturally. The birds usually play with wooden toys. Wooden toys will be destroyed. Some birds may be frustrated, the owners of the destructive nature of their parrots. However chewing is a natural instinct and is essential for birds mental and physical well-being. If you see only toys acrylic, which often find other ways, more expensive to meet their needs to chew (that) forms of furniture. It ‘important to know what woods are safe for your bird. Both software and hardwoods are commonly used in toys.
Safe Woods (not an exhaustive list):
Pine, balsa, birch, alder, poplar, maple, walnut, ash, Apple, Elm, Cactus (Cholla) and Manzanita
Unsafe Woods (not an exhaustive list):
Cedar, red cherry, plywood. Oak
If you do not make your own toys with pressure treated wood, as has been treated with arsenic and poison birds. If using natural branches to ensure that they have not been exposed to insecticides. Also make sure that the branches to collect in areas away from the highways, where plants have included toxic emissions from cars. Scrub branches, all with a non-toxic disinfectant (bleach diluted) Wash and dry.
If you like clean, not toys, not. We recommend cleaning with a damp cloth or sand to clean up contaminated land clean. If your bird likes his toys dunk Remember that moisture can promote bacterial growth and toys to be destroyed or thoroughly cleaned and dried in a low temperature in the oven, first on the bird.
Birds are able to distinguish colors, therefore, more attractive and interesting color makes wooden toys for birds. Wood Manufacturers usually color with food coloring or vegetable dyes. We believe, not believe in aromatic wood like a bird that should not be encouraged to take the wood and, if not properly controlled, the fruit sugar often an ideal medium for bacterial growth. Do not buy toys that were painted or stained to add color. If you live in a toy with painted parts of interest (for example, blocks ABC) will ensure that not only-toxic, child safe paints were used.
ROPE
Different types of rope are used in toys for birds. Only 100% natural fibers such as cotton, flax, hemp (jute) or sisal bird toys should be used. Nylon blend ropes should never be used because it can lead to serious injuries and cuts on the strength of the strands, when the birds get caught in it. Ropes can be guaranteed, if properly maintained and bird’s beak and nails cut preserved. It was found safety problems, if excessive wear occurs. The birds are stifled and lost circulation in the legs, from badly managed wires tangled. Rope toys have to be very useful for solving the problems of feather picking and then we do not like how the rope of a discount valid material. Bird owners have a responsibility to check every day his rope toy bird and cut the rope or toy discarded if they are frayed, and a danger to the bird.
CHAIN
Chain should not open links are welded. Un-welded chain provides sharp surfaces and narrow openings, which was known to cut the toes. Make sure the connections are a dimension of security for your bird, if your toes can be divided into the links in the results of his fingers or legs caught. Length of the chain is also a consideration, such as increased length of the chain could potentially end wrapped around the neck of a bird in a vigorous game session. Like the wood components are chewed off, could develop a chain of risk. Owners must monitor the status of toys and ensure that they do not develop physical changes to security risks.
FASTENERS
This is a major cause for concern and fittings are expensive and therefore many manufacturers cut corners and the use of potentially dangerous products such as split key ring or a dog leash type snap hooks. Birds are divided by the outside world and lost circulation to the toes and the language of toys with rings and brackets connected. For Conures or larger birds, you may be Quick links (also known as C-clamps), or pear link to toys to play with the range of birds. They are available in a variety of formats and can be easily tightened with a key to prevent the bird from uncoupling his toys. This type of attack is at least the potential for injury. They are available in a variety of formats, ranging from your local hardware store to be purchased when you replace the connections from other unsafe toys.
Do not split key rings, spring clips or metal rings attached shower your toys. Small piece of hardware may accidentally take. The birds are carved toes on rings and tongue Split and spring-type terminals.
ZINC
Much has been said recently about the toxicity of zinc in birds. Many bird toys are coated with zinc (galvanized) metal parts. Zinc is often found in the coatings powder cage. Some health professionals for avian influenza have stated that in order for health problems of zinc mean that the parrot is in fact to swallow the metal and beak “of the parties is not sufficient for toxicity study development, as the galvanized coating is extremely brittle and scaly. If a bird spends a lot of time chewing on toys, which is the hardware (, washers, quick links), wire, and then you take in enough zinc to build toxic levels in their systems over time. Owners who are concerned about the possible health effects are often stainless steel parts in the local hardware store is located. This is often made much more convenient for the consumer, such as’ purchase of toys with parts in stainless steel.
PLASTICS
Acrylics are used in many toys today, and if properly sorted according to size, the birds are virtually indestructible. When purchasing toys, we recommend the acrylic acrylics have a minimum thickness of 3 / 16?. Recently there has been a change in the direction of wooden toys, because even if the acrylic strong and interesting are not funny for the bird that wants to chew. We suggest that some birds will be your toys acrylic or a mixture of acrylic and wood are durable and light, are used to support the bird.
If one considers that the toys with plastic parts, the owner of a bird needs the type of plastic components into account (soft and brittle) in relation to the size of birds. Brittle plastics should not be given to larger birds, since, if they could break very sharp edges are formed and if ingested accidentally rupture the organs. Hard plastic toys specifically designed for parakeets and Cockatiels should not be designed for larger birds, with the bill, given the power to destroy.
SKIN
The skin is an ideal material for the birds safely play with and chew. Most of the birds in particular, as is now the junction nodes, in strips of leather made.
Vegetable-Tanned skin should only be used on bird toys. Do not buy toys made of leather or leather dyed with chemicals that are toxic to birds that most (eg, chromium, formaldehyde tanning). For this reason you should not retire old shoes, belts and wallets to your bird toy box.
Replace when dirty or wet skin. Bacteria thrive in these conditions. Many toy manufacturers are selling leather straps parts.
When stuffed toys hanging from the skin (or rope or chain) to avoid a long series between the toy and the cage. Some wild birds, with their games, if you can get the leather wrapped around the neck and strangle them. It is better to keep the toy close to the bars of the cage.
RINGS
In selecting plays safely with large plastic rings or links to the chain rings are of a size that the bird you can not hang your head and choke on them. They are also a number of toys with caution loop jump rings together like birds, when they were caught between the rings similar fate met.
BELLS
Birds love to get some fun bells and the noise source of their happiness. When a bird is mechanically inclined, and you can remove the clapper Swallow / suffocation. Make sure the coil is removed from the bird. If you do not remove or securely attached or welded (we recommend silver solder). Make sure the coil does not lead (toxic), if you mean that you will be able to dent the clapper with your fingernail. Do not buy toys that use Jingle Bells kind can, fingers caught in wide and narrow openings to be cut, it is recommended that a cow or a drawing Liberty Bell. Consequently, the big bell around the bird, in order to be able to resist the power of the bill.
FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
Just because the label says the product is safe, does not mean it is good for your bird. Each toy does have the potential to be safe when properly trained for the bird. Ask your provider or owner of a toy bird shop for help and advice on how to choose an appropriate toy for your bird.
As with children, not a toy, 100% safe for all birds. Use common sense and monitor your bird first time you have him a new toy. See how you interact with the toy, as it matters most and where and when it is allowed to play with him (some toys are safe, out of the cage) to be determined.
Provide a range of toys and rotate them in and out of the cage or play area. Diversity is the situation improves boredom and keep your bird more alert and curious. Keep at least 2-3 toys in the cage and the birds are not excessively, the cage the bird is no room to move.
Do not assume that if your bird, not a toy, do not play with toys. Try something different and take time to observe what your bird interesting results in terms of design, texture or size.
Introduction of toys for birds, but she is small. . . not intimidated. Toys hand are just some of the safest toys available and are particularly good for young birds because it will help develop hand-eye coordination.
Play with your bird. . . birds the more I think it’s very funny, the balls on the floor or couch to catch Chase Play “or” Pick it up “with mom or dad.
This guide is by no means complete, but we tried to address the issues as possible. If in doubt, ask for help. We would like to welcome a relationship of long, healthy and happy with your bird.
