Customer Review: Perfect toy for the fire truck lover
My son’s favorite Christmas gift this year. He is 2.5.
The design challenge for a Lego toy pitched at the toddler crowd is creating a toy that makes sense to the kid both when it is put together AND when it is taken apart. This toy manages very nicely to balance the design so that it dis-assembles quite completely, making it satisfying to put together — but the pieces are recognizable and intuitively part of a fire truck, so my 2 year old son can understand HOW to put it back together. Also, the pieces can go back together in a number of different ways, and still make a recognizable fire truck.
I also like that the three basic structural pieces — the cab, the tractor base, and the trailer base, are generic “truck” pieces, not just fire truck pieces. If you have a few more Duplo blocks these three basic pieces can be used to build OTHER sorts of trucks, not just fire trucks.
By way of comparison, I also bought the Duplo cement mixer for my son. This is an attractive design when put together, but it is only a cement mixer. It comes apart into four main pieces and there is really only one way to put them back together. Result, my son spends hours playing with the fire truck, and has largely ignored the cement mixer. (Despite a strong native interest in cement mixers.)
The Duplo sized blocks work very well for two year old hands, too.
